European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
