Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue
Each time a significant prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored recently
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
