Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together resides a profound examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He dreads the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that arise in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.
